The Custom Jewelry Design Process
1. Designing
Whether you already have a clear idea of your engagement ring design or you need help understanding what’s possible with custom ring design, we’ll work together to bring your vision to life. I’ll start by asking you about your partner — their color and shape preferences, elements of their personality, key moments in your love story, and what their daily lifestyle is. From there, I’ll collect a $500 design fee, which goes toward your final ring cost, and will start sketching a stunning-yet-sturdy design that will last a lifetime.
2. Sourcing
Sourcing the metals and gemstones for your custom jewelry is an essential step because materials influence both design and budget. As such, we may end up tweaking the sketches slightly. Design changes that occur after materials have been ordered will incur an additional fee.
3. Fabrication
Your design is finalized, your materials have arrived, and now it’s time for you to take a step back and let me get my hands dirty. Using either metal fabrication or wax carving techniques, I’ll begin crafting your custom engagement ring. Depending on your design, we may also need to enlist the help of my favorite metal casters and stone setters.
4. Ring Delivery
Start planning your proposal… your engagement ring is finished! It’ll take around 6 – 8 weeks after fabrication begins for the ring to be completed, at which point you can come pick it up at my Portland, Oregon studio. If you’re not local, I can also mail the ring to you. Each ring comes in a walnut box, perfect for popping the question.

I’m Allison Ullmer, a metalsmith and fine art jeweler, and trust me — I know exactly where you are. My partner heard me when I said “don’t ever buy me jewelry,” and proposed with a solid gold ring instead. I went on the same journey you’re about to, evaluating my aesthetic and lifestyle to find the perfect stone and shapes for my ring. The end result means more to me than any designer ring ever could because it was crafted with heart. And I know your fiancé is going to feel the same.

HOW MUCH DOES A CUSTOM RING COST?
Most custom engagement rings or wedding bands cost between $2,500 – $6,500. This cost varies depending on the size of the ring, metal used, and gemstone costs. I require a $500 design fee after the initial design call, which goes toward my time and expertise sketching, researching, and sourcing for your project. The design fee will be applied toward the final cost of the ring.
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
As an experienced jeweler who values environmental conservation, I use 100% FAIRMINED gold and ethically sourced or repurposed diamonds and gems. I adore using vintage pieces, and love it when my clients come to the project with an existing piece they want to evolve into a custom engagement ring.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY CUSTOM RING?
A [fully custom ring][1] will take 8 – 12 weeks to complete depending on design finalization, stone sourcing, and other factors.
DO I HAVE TO LIVE IN PORTLAND TO DESIGN A CUSTOM RING WITH YOU?
Absolutely not! I’d love to host you in my Portland, Oregon studio to discuss design and show you sketches in person, but that is not required. I can ship anywhere within the contiguous United States.
WHAT IF I WANT YOU TO DESIGN MY RING FOR ME?
As a jeweler, my influence is always in my work, but my primary focus as I design your custom ring is putting as much of your style and preferences into the work as possible. I love it when my clients bring photos, doodles, colors, textures, and other reference points to illustrate the vibe you’re going for. If you want a ring that is 100% designed by me with no influence from you at all, perhaps you’ll find a ring that you love in my shop; I personally designed every stunning ring in the collection.
